Whilst I have already suggested that affiliate marketing is effectively CPA by another name, it does not necessarily follow that CPA advertising and affiliate marketing are exactly the same, even though under both kinds of arrangement, the people at ‘the sharp end’, those who are doing the actual selling (for example, website or blog publishers) are often referred to as affiliates.

Nevertheless, there are some crucial differences between affiliate programs and CPA advertising networks.

Firstly, affiliate marketing programs are always focused on selling a product or service, and the affiliate for such a program almost never receives any reward if no sale is made. Under a CPA based advertising arrangement, however, it is possible that the advertiser will be willing to pay for other events as well, either in addition to or instead of paying for every sale that is made.

For example, in many industries, advertisers are willing to pay for leads so that when a visitor goes to the advertiser’s site and completes an online form, the affiliate who sent the visitor earns himself a commission for generating this highly qualified targeted lead. It is also common for CPA advertising network websites to work in close partnership with their advertising clientele, whereas most sites that offer affiliate products (such as Clickbank.com) deal with ‘advertisers’ (i.e. those who create the affiliate products that they then promote and try to attract affiliates to through sites like Clickbank) in a much more distant, ‘arms length’ fashion.

CPA advertising networks are, in this way, very client focused whereas the majority of affiliate networks tend to be considerably more passive when it comes to the individual performance of their affiliates.

In addition, affiliate networks commonly ask affiliates to pay a joining fee, and they may also want to attract only affiliates who are also pre-qualified.
CPA networks, on the other hand, are generally much less demanding about who can enroll in the network and are most often free to join.

As well as tending to be very focused on individual advertisers’ performances, CPA networks are also likely to work very hard to retain their affiliated ‘sales people’, often by adopting the simple but expedient tactic of paying them extremely well and making sure that payments go out on a regular timetabled basis.

Ask questions first before you join an affiliate program. Do a little research about the choices of program that you intend to join into. Get some answers because they will be the deciding point of what you will be achieving later on.

Will it cost you anything to join? Most affiliate programs being offered today are absolutely free of charge. So why settle for those that charge you some dollars before joining.

When do they issue the commission checks? Every program is different. Some issue their checks once a month, every quarter, etc. Select the one that is suited to your payment time choice. Many affiliate programs are setting a minimum earned commission amount that an affiliate must meet or exceed in order for their checks to be issued.

What is the hit per sale ratio? This is the average number of hits to a banner or text link it takes to generate a sale based on all affiliate statistics. This factor is extremely important because this will tell you how much traffic you must generate before you can earn a commission from the sale.

How are referrals from an affiliate’s site tracked and for how long do they remain in the system? You need to be confident on the program enough to track those people you refer from your site. This is the only way that you can credit for a sale. The period of time that those people stay in the system is also important. This is because some visitors do not buy initially but may want to return later to make the purchase. Know if you will still get credit for the sale if it is done some months from a certain day.

What are the kinds of affiliate stats available? Your choice of affiliate program should be capable of offering detailed stats. They should be available online anytime you decide to check them out. Constantly checking your individual stats is important to know how many impressions, hits and sales are already generated from your site. Impressions are the number of times the banner or text link was viewed by a visitor of your site. A hit is the one clicking on the banner or text links.

Does the affiliate program also pay for the hits and impressions besides the commissions on sales? It is important that impressions and hits are also paid, as this will add to the earnings you get from the sales commission. This is especially important if the program you are in offers low sales to be able to hit ratio.

Who is the online retailer? Find out whom you are doing business with to know if it is really a solid company. Know the products they are selling and the average amount they are achieving. The more you know about the retailer offering you the affiliate program, the easier it will be for you to know if that program is really for you and your site.

Is the affiliate a one tier or two tier program? A single tier program pays you only for the business you yourself have generated. A two tier program pays you for the business, plus it also pays you a commission on the on the sales generated by any affiliate you sponsor in your program. Some two-tier programs are even paying small fees on each new affiliate you sponsor. More like a recruitment fee.

Lastly, what is the amount of commission paid? 5% – 20% is the commission paid by most programs. .01% – .05% is the amount paid for each hit. If you find a program that also pays for impressions, the amount paid is not much at all. As you can see from the figures, you will now understand why the average sales amount and hit to sale ratio is important.

These are just some of the questions that needed answering first before you enter into an affiliate program. You should be familiar with the many important aspects that your chosen program should have before incorporating them into your website. Try to ask your affiliate program choices these questions. These can help you select the right program for you site from among the many available.

When you’re searching for an affiliate program that is going to be right for your online business it can get tiresome at times. This is due to all of the thousands of affiliate programs that are offered on the Internet. So, just how are you supposed to find the ones that are best suited to help your business increase its revenue potential? Well, following a few simple steps can help ease the process and allow you to make the right decision.

1. Make sure that the affiliate program is reputable and has gotten good results for other businesses. You can find this information by simply researching it on the Internet-but don’t be afraid to make a phone call or two and ask around.

2. Make sure the program offers, and will continue to offer, competitive rates. If you discover a product that you are willing to promote from another merchant search the Internet for similar affiliate-sourced products. This can give you a better idea of the kind of sales that you will get for a particular product.

3. Ask if the program offers residual income. This type of income is recurring income and is preferred because the payments are issued every month from a single sale. For example, selling memberships to a dating site is considered residual income because every month that a member renews a membership, you are paid for them remaining a member.

4. Make sure the program offers a good pay schedule. Usually, businesses pay their affiliates weekly, bi-weekly or monthly. Beware though, as some merchants won’t even pay until you reach a certain threshold. You need to consider all of the payment options that they are offering before you choose an affiliate program.

5. Try to choose a program that offers promotional resources. It is easier to promote an item if there are banners, websites and ads that are given at no additional cost. This will also make your advertising efforts more fruitful and a lot simpler.

6. Make sure to get detailed information on how the affiliate program works. If you are even the slightest bit confused, then you should move on to the next program option. Affiliate programs should always be able to make it clear just how their particular program operates.

7. Don’t go with a program that requires you to invest anything or requires you to stock merchandise. As an affiliate, you become a part of the company’s sale force but you work only on commission and should not hold inventory.

8. Try and generate leads for your affiliate by using email newsletters. However, a Web site is an essential element if you intend to generate serious revenue.

9. Read up on how to build a home-based business and what it takes to succeed. This can be especially important if this is your first time trying it out.

10. You need to consider all of the factors involved in affiliate programs. When you follow simple steps, these questions can become a lot easier to find answers to, and finding the affiliate right for your online business will be as easy as pie.

Sites from major e-commerce vendors to Yahoo run affiliate programs and are always looking for ways to increase their sales revenue. Button and banner ads are placed on affiliate sites as a means to attract more attention. E-mail messages and text ads also help to promote the site’s products, and now mobile is part of the mix, too. The affiliates are paid a percent of each sale that they generate. Many web sites will have links that can be used to make purchases to the related content on the site. For example, Amazon.com can be used to purchase books, CDs or other products that are related to the merchant site. This is a very important element to the affiliate programs.

If you think you might be ready to begin the process of obtaining an affiliate program, then there are thousands of companies that are ready to offer their services. Never think that haphazardly choosing an affiliate program is a wise thing, as if they are all the same. Set a goal to deliver targeted leads in an effort to get the best return for your efforts. Once you have finally registered with an affiliate, you will get all of the promotional materials from the sponsor company. This can come in the form of text ads that can be formatted directly to your site or used in email marketing campaigns, graphical ads or displays that can be shown on your site. You can use these materials to advertise the sponsor and the company’s offerings.

Affiliate programs are either the right choice for your online business or they’re not, and you just may have a particular online operation that does not “play nice” with the affiliate structure. The best way to find out is to research all of the available programs and what they offer. If you take the time to investigate each one, you are sure to find the best one that will be able to suit all of your online business needs.
